South Knoxville Elementary meets in a building that has been part of the community for one hundred years and has a diverse student body with active parent participation. Community members volunteer to work with pupils both during and after school. Learning hands-on skills like gardening, students discover they have the power to improve the city and inspire each other. Lessons that can be taken with them beyond the classroom. The school earned the Tennessee Service Learning Award for the second time in February 2021. Their popular principal, Tanna Nicely, admitted it wasn’t easy logging 800 hours of community service during a pandemic, but her students and community volunteers took up challenge. Her modest city school of under 200 children from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade showed itself a powerful influence as students, teachers, and parents embraced service learning as part of the Community Schools Initiative. They accumulated the 800 hours by doing services such as planning and working to build a community vegetable garden, picking up litter, running a food drive, helping the school resource officer, and designing ways to simply be more kind to one another. The service-learning model is based on the idea that doing is more effective than telling when it comes to teaching. Instead of just telling students not to litter, students learn how litter is destructive to their neighborhood when they actually go out to clean up local streets. They learn the blessing of sharing by having the opportunity to provide clothing, food, and Christmas presents to neighbors in need. As a Community Schools Member, South Knoxville Elementary has created a hub for resources that are helpful to the school and the neighborhood. Local businesses, organizations, and individuals partner with the school to help all students have successful learning experiences through funding and mentorship.

We are so lucky to have a rock star leader such as Mrs. Nicely She brings a love for our community like no other. She has high standards and expects the best from all of us. We in South Knoxville are so happy the central office doesn't realize the leadership that is happening right down the road Our...
