Franklin School of Opportunity is the hub for alternative education programming for Lakewood City Schools. Administratively, FSO is structured as an annex to Lakewood High School, though the FSO curriculum is separate. At FSO, 125 high school students pursue a hybrid program where core courses are taken on campus and electives can be taken online. Teachers at Franklin may also split their time with Lakewood High School. FSO is an attractive option for non-traditional learners. The faculty and staff collaborate to create a safe and supportive environment where students expand their academic, social, and emotional skill sets. Teachers structure lessons to highlight the importance of community and relationships in addition to core subject skills. Project-based and hands-on learning are prioritized at Franklin. Walk past the gym and you might see Environmental Science students developing a scale model of the solar system. Later, you may find students learning the importance of precision in weights and measures as they study the properties of matter. Technology and career-based projects are featured in several ways at Franklin School of Opportunity. In this alternative education environment, students work with technology in structured ways, gaining transferable skills that will help them in their workplace and community after graduation.
