Established in 1980 and named after oilman and conservationist Will J. Reid, Reid High School is a public continuation school in the Long Beach Unified School District. Located at 2153 W. Hill Street in Long Beach, the school enrolls approximately 175 students and serves grades 11 and 12. Home of the Raptors, Reid High is designed to support students who do not thrive in a traditional education setting due to behavioral, emotional or attendance issues. Reid’s mission is to provide support in an alternative education setting through core math, English, science curriculum, and special programs designed to support the academic and emotional needs of each student. One of the school’s most notable programs is their well-respected “Bridge to Success,” that teaches life skills and guides students in creating a positive vision for their future. The program features guest speakers, mentors, field trips and career fairs. It also integrates instruction in college and career readiness, as well as support in creating resumes, searching for employment, conducting mock interviews and mental health support. Reid’s guidelines for student behavior are enforced to help them succeed, including a bell schedule, dress code and instruction in the resolution of conflict through peaceful communication.
