West End School (West End) is a private, tuition-free center of learning in Louisville, Kentucky with a mission to help students reach their potential, regardless of circumstances.
Enrolling prekindergarten through eighth-grade students, West End provides a boarding-school environment where students stay on-site five nights a week. The school cultivates well-rounded young adults by fostering strong study habits and a keen sense of responsibility and community.
Funded almost entirely by private donations, the school targets incoming students who perform at grade level but who seek an alternative to available public schools. Most students come from Louisville’s West End, but the school also draws from ZIP codes all over Louisville and across the Ohio River in Indiana.
Founded by Robert and Deborah Blair in 2005, West End was conceived as a boys’ school and started with just three students studying out of a private home on Chickasaw’s Chestnut Street. As enrollment grew, the Blairs moved into the former Carter Elementary School on Virginia Avenue west of the Shawnee Expressway. These days, West End serves approximately 140 students and plans to open enrollment to girls.
The main building includes classrooms, dining facilities and dorms. The school also offers a state-of-the-art athletic center named in honor of Darrell Griffith, a former National Basketball Association Rookie of the Year, West End alumnus and school board member.
In addition to the West End’s Soaring Eagles’ soccer, basketball, tennis and track, West End offers music instruction, theater, chess club, a scouting program, an outdoor pollinator garden and a Makers’ Space for budding engineers.
The school boasts that all its alumni go on to complete high school, many of them through scholarships offered by other private schools in Louisville.
