Wingra School is a private school that serves kids from kindergarten through eighth grade. Multi-age classrooms at Wingra offer students the opportunity to grow by interacting and cooperating with children of different experiences, maturity levels, and abilities. Just like its classrooms, learning at Wingra is non-traditional. The school encourages social and academic growth by exposing students to life within a democratic community, immersion in nature, and self exploration through the arts, honest dialogue, and times of quiet reflection. Wingra facilitates that growth with an outdoor classroom and environmental curriculum, as well as service-based learning that combines academic and social goals to address needs within the community. Continuing its non-traditional approach to education, Wingra does not have letter grades or even tests. Instead it attempts to offer assessment on learning goals set by each student, their family and their teachers. Students and the educators then create an ongoing narrative describing their progress on achieving their goals. Admission to the school generally starts with a school tour. After that is an application process and a student visit to the school. About two weeks after submitting a completed application, Wingra shares options for enrollment. Tuition is customized per family, and is based on factors like general income, expenses, assets and debt.

My family moved to Madison in 2021. My two daughters have been at Wingra since the move and we are very happy that we found the school. I have one child that is very active and loves the outdoors and one that is quieter and prefers reading to running. Both of my children have found a home here at Wingra. They feel seen and heard, they are learning to advocate for themselves and others, and they are interested and excited to go to school every day.

Incredible school. Supportive teachers and staff know the kids deeply and are able to provide lots of individual attention due to the small classes. Every adult in the building knows my kid - it feels so safe and welcoming. Detailed, qualitative assessment evaluates the child's progress academically...

My son is in his 4th year at Wingra School. He came into the 2nd year Nest a quiet, shy, tentative, 5 year-old out of the anxious and unpredictable world of the pandemic. I have watched Wingra face many transitions and challenges during our time here, and despite the changes in leadership along the...

I can't say enough good things about Wingra. My kiddo chose which preschool to attend requesting an art school. We had a phenomenal experience at Preschool of the Arts and wanted to find a similar structure for the transition to elementary. As an innovative educator committed to project-based learni...

We love being a part of Wingra School! Our kindergartener is thriving in the Nest classroom. We love how much time they spend outdoors and how intertwined the curricula is with the greater Madison community. The administrators and teachers are caring and responsive. Our son is excited to go to schoo...
