The Mary Helen Guest Elementary School in Walled Lake serves PK through Grade 5. It is one of a dozen elementary in the Walled Lake Consolidated District. It is about one mile northeast of the city of Walled Lake One thing that sets it apart from many other elementary schools nationwide is the offering of a "Junior Kindergarten" program. It covers a full day in school like a regular kindergarten. However, the focus is on developing student readiness for regular academics through the use of a play-based curriculum.
A major focus of learning at Mary Helen Guest is ensuring that students develop a sense of self-reliance. With that capacity, students can adapt to changing course material as they advance through the elementary grades and are equipped to contribute to society. Learning the foundations of social studies, math, science, and language arts is key to the process. Teachers work as closely as possible with parents and guardians to make sure all students get individual attention as well as learn how to work as a team with other students,
The Mary Helen Guest Parent Teacher Association is involved in many aspects of daily school programming. But there's a lot more. The association also develops special event programs and field trips. Music and the arts are also a part of each student's day in school. Physical fitness and athletics are also introduced. The emphasis is on structured and non-structured playtime, both indoors and out. Trips to the district's nearby Outdoor Education Center with parents, guardians, and teachers help students get more familiar with natural surroundings and wildlife.
