“Every student matters and every moment counts.” The motto of Cherokee Elementary sets the stage for success at the Memphis-Shelby County public school serving the neighborhoods of Orange Mound and Cherokee. The school takes community and safety seriously, every year fostering a tightly knit family of around 400 students ranging from pre-K to fifth grade. Family Lunch Days, Literacy Nights and other special events are part of Cherokee Elementary’s intentional involvement of parents and grandparents in their children’s education. Other community partners include the Memphis Police Department and Memphis Fire Department, who frequently visit the school to read to students and participate in other activities. While students may not have the highest test scores in Memphis, their math and reading proficiency ratings are trending upward with the help of Title I funding and a rigorous and detailed School Improvement Plan. Cherokee Elementary offers a unique variety of extracurriculars including Majorette Club, Book Club, Entrepreneurship, intramural sports and more. With these opportunities, a caring community and standards-aligned instruction, Cherokee Elementary proves their seriousness about their mission to “promote a safe learning environment that promotes a love for learning daily, while setting goals and celebrating growth for all students.”

Terrible since former Principal Rowan left. Academics has degraded. Food is terrible & staff can be very rude (mostlyu Principal Payne).

The school is great because students are made to feel that they can accomplish anything! The principal sets high expectations for all and provides a path for them to meet the expectations.

The school has really improved, and is now one of the highest performing elementary schools in the district. The curriculum is rigorous and students have many incentives to learn.
