Sherwood Elementary is proud to be one of the Memphis-Shelby County Schools’ 45 themed Optional Programs, offering its approximately 550 students an education enriched by performance and visual arts.
The Sherwood Elementary school zone spans a number of neighborhoods, including its namesake home of Sherwood Forest, Audubon Park, Normal Station, eastern Messick Buntyn and the northwestern quadrant of Colonial Acres. But many Sherwood students attend from other parts of the city as well, their parents taking advantage of School Choice for the location near the University of Memphis and the free arts programming.
Some of Sherwood Elementary’s performing arts offerings include Drama Club, Dance Team, Choir and tap classes. Art Club and the Arts to Grow partnership with Dixon Gallery engage students interested in visual arts. Other extracurriculars include the Dynamic Debate Team, Robotics Club and Girls Inc.
With a teacher-student ratio of 16:1, Sherwood Elementary reading and math proficiencies test around average for their school system. Academics are far from the only education students receive, however: Sherwood Ace Archers are prepared by exceptional arts enrichment, community volunteer opportunities and much more to be well-rounded, responsible and college-ready citizens.

the stars are not a true rating of this school my child has attended this school and I hate the principal and some of the teachers their they are so unprofessional, rude, and dry to a lot of the parents that I have noticed and the optional programs are not what you would consider a optional program...

Sherwood will never receive proper recognition because of the location, but it is an exceptional school. The staff is wonderful and the principals are extraordinary. I am well pleased with this school. My daughter who is now a 3rd grader gas been going here since KK, they are very orderly, respectful and serious about academics and time. I appreciate what my daughter is learning here as an optional student.!
