Communication, love, accountability, perseverance, structure: These core values provide the educational foundation at Memphis’ Sherwood Middle. Sharing a name with its neighborhood of Sherwood Forest, the school provides a public education for sixth, seventh and eighth graders residing in Orange Mound, Cherokee, Kimball, Sherwood Forest and other surrounding neighborhoods. Around 850 students recite the creed every school day: “I am a Sherwood Archer and will always aim for excellence.”
Reading and math scores have not been Sherwood Middle’s strong points historically, but massive efforts to improve academic performance promise results in 2023 and beyond. Students at Sherwood Middle benefit from Title I funding, college prep courses, and exceptional community involvement including the Fathers in Action volunteer program.
When it comes to physical education, Sherwood Archers have the opportunity to excel in softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, basketball and football. And students interested in the arts have ample opportunity to shine in Drawing Club, Acappella Club, and the Drama and Poetry Society. Meanwhile, social-emotional education is far from neglected: Stress Relief Club, Yoga Club, and Color and Chill Club are just a few activities that give students an opportunity to round out their whole-child education at Sherwood Middle.
