Tucked away in a residential neighborhood with a city park in its backyard, Willow Oaks Elementary boasts a quiet location that belies the buzz of activity inside. Though its school zone is geographically small, Willow Oaks hosts around 650 kids in its halls every day. Most hail from the neighborhoods of Colonial Willow and Colonial Acres, but as part of Memphis-Shelby County’s Optional School program, the school draws students from all over the city. Like all Optional Schools, Willow Oaks Elementary offers a rigorous academic education supplemented with additional themed areas of study. The award-winning school draws many for its two enrichment themes: arts and technology. Parents choose Willow Oaks for such perks as its frequent visiting artists, St. Jude STEM Club, Orff Music, Gardening Club and String Orchestra. The school hosts numerous community and family events, including multicultural celebrations and performances by their Dance Sprout Program and instrumental ensemble. With such a rich menu of technology and arts opportunities, Willow Oaks students test considerably higher than the district average in math. A full-time bilingual mentor and supportive community partners ensure every student receives the support they need to meet their full potential as a leader of tomorrow.
