Formerly known as Hawthorne Elementary, Michael T. Hughes Elementary was renamed in 2018 in honor of a devout public education advocate who served Mesa Public Schools for two decades. Also in 2018, Michael Hughes received the ASBA Barbara Robey Lifetime Achievement Award for his 40 years of contribution to the betterment of social services and education for young people.
Hughes Elementary is a Title 1 school located near the heart of Mesa in the Mesa Patios neighborhood and much like its namesake, the elementary school’s dedication to education and inclusion can be seen at every turn.
To better support its students’ behavioral needs, it has implemented a program called Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS). PBIS operates on a scaffolded intervention model that addresses individual behaviors in and outside of the classroom to help students develop healthy and appropriate behaviors early on.
Hughes Elementary also embraces STEAM and AVID which are a few more vital frameworks utilized to prepare young minds for their futures while challenging them where they’re at currently.
The school understands the benefit of using music and athletic activities to round out its curriculum. It offers a host of athletics and after-school programs for students to participate in including Xplore, a balanced after-school program offering academic and athletic activities for students of Mesa Public Schools.

Our sons absolutely love this school, and his teacher. We moved from another district in the valley, and I completely see a difference in our son. He loves going to school, his teacher has been just absolutely amazing. I can't say enough wonderful things about the school.

worst school!! Teachers or Principle don't care about students learning and well being.my child was left sleeping in class all day and the teacher text me 10 minutes before the school day ended to tell me my kid was sick all day....
