Charles R. Drew K-8 Center is Brownsville’s magnet school for visual and performing arts. Over 500 kindergarten through eighth-grade students are taught traditional curricula enhanced by magnet programs in band, dance, orchestra, and theatre. Kids who have an interest in the arts get opportunities to follow their dreams through specialized classes and performance opportunities at school. The school’s faculty and staff work to create an environment that encourages social and emotional learning in every class. Outside the classroom, the school’s campus has a spacious playground area, consisting of a large grassy field that can be used for a variety of sports and games. In one corner, a baseball diamond sets the stage for baseball and softball games and, at the other end of the field, four lighted basketball/multisport courts offer opportunities for all kinds of exercise and activities. To start every day off on the right foot, Charles R. Drew K-8 Center offers a free breakfast for students. The school also has an active PTA and encourages parents to be involved with their kids’ studies, which helps children succeed. At Charles R.
