St. Bernard Academy boasts a long West End history. It was founded in 1866 by the Sisters of Mercy from Dublin, Ireland. The school initially began as an all-girls school meeting in Downtown Nashville next door to the State Capitol building. Its mission focuses on the academic, spiritual and emotional education of students in a nurturing environment. When the school moved to the historic convent building on 21st Avenue in 1905, it grew to be so successful and popular that it expanded into a larger facility in 1960. It has continued to flourish in this current location.
When the school faced a possible closure by the church in the ‘80s, parents formed a nonprofit group to save it and became the first group in the country to do this. St. Bernard’s carries on today as an independent Catholic school that serves around 350 students from preschool through eighth grade. The school added a 16,000-square-foot addition in 2016 on its 150th anniversary.
The school is a National Catholic Education Association member in partnership with the Mercy Education System of the Americas. It emphasizes compassion and respect for diversity and the individual qualities of each student.

St. Bernard Academy combines a focus on character development with a positive, supportive environment and strong academics. Small class sizes allow for personalized attention, helping students grow both personally and academically. It's a school that values integrity, kindness, and leadership.

An academic focussed school that also offers various other opportunities. Our son in grade 6 is thriving here, the staff and teachers are very involved and motivated, there is emphasis on academic rigor. Ample opportunity in sports and extra curricular activities.Highly recommend this school .
