One of The Nations’ alternative high schools is The Academy at Old Cockrill, which is part of the Metro Nashville public schools system. In partnership with the Simon Youth Foundation, the district established The Academy to serve students ages 17 through 21, grades 11 and 12, in order to receive their high school diplomas. These students are often at risk of dropping out, and this gives them a second chance to finish high school and move into a career or further their education. The Academy at Old Cockrill may not have the sports and extra-curricular activities of a traditional school, but it offers students the opportunity to learn in a more flexible way, with small classes to accommodate each student’s learning style and one-on-one interaction with their teachers. A compassionate and dedicated faculty and staff support students to help them in reaching their goal to finish high school. The Academy offers college and career planning assistance, test preparation, and job placement for their students. Once they graduate, students become members of the Simon Youth Foundation Alumni Network. This gives them access to additional opportunities to network with thousands of their fellow alumni for personal and professional connections.
