Founded in 1952, Hynes School is located at 990 Harrison Ave. in New Orleans’ Lakeview neighborhood and was named for Edward Hynes, a local educator whose love of teaching earned him the Superintendent of Schools position in 1924. Now part of the Hynes Charter School network, Hynes Lakeview operates from the belief that cultural diversity, integrity, and academic excellence should be admired and rewarded. To achieve this, they teach from a student focused orientation which encourages the pupils to set goals, engage with their lessons and fellow students, and work to achieve favorable outcomes. Hynes Lakeview serves pre-kindergarten to grade eight and enrolls nearly 700 students. Their student-teacher ratio is 19:1, and state testing scores show the school’s pupils are 92% proficient in reading and 84% proficient in mathematics. The school has been recognized as one of the 10 best elementary charter schools in Louisiana and has ranked #3 for having the best public elementary and middle school teachers in Louisiana. The institution offers transportation to and from school each weekday, has before and after care for students, and is Americans with Disabilities Act compliant. They also feature a French immersion program, science and computer labs, and a partnership with the University of New Orleans. I rate Hynes at the very top of the scale. We have been so pleased with the progress just in three years (Pre-K 3 through kindergarten). Everything about Hynes has been positive, from office staff to teachers to programs to academics to principal!
