Located at 5500 Paris Ave. in New Orleans’ Gentilly neighborhood, Holy Cross School is a private Catholic school that serves boys from pre-kindergarten through graduation. The campus is one of two operated by the school, with the other being found on Elysian Fields Avenue. That elementary facility was added to Holy Cross School in 2015, while the middle and high school campus currently occupied on Paris Avenue was moved into in 2010. The roots of the school, however, go much deeper than that. It was founded in 1849 by the Congregation of the Holy Cross and has been part of the New Orleans community for well over 170 years. Holy Cross School enrolls over 1,100 students and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 15–to-1, which helps keep class sizes small so everyone can receive one-on-one time with the teacher. This strategy seems to work as 82% of graduates continue on to a four-year university. The school encourages students to have experiences outside academics, so it offers a full fine arts curriculum including chorus, drama and band. The athletic program is made up of over a dozen competitive teams such as swimming, golf, bowling and track and field.

Holy Cross is historically a good school. As far as academics are concerned, it is just above the standard of what a private school should be. Holy Cross has continued to grow in diversity and excelled in many sports and extracurricular activities.

I went to this school and it was probably the worst time of my life. All of the students were obsessed with sports so if you don't like sports the chances of you having friends is low. Most of the teachers are coaches who are horrible at teaching and don't even get up from their desks. I can honestly say that in my 5 years there I barely learned a thing. None of the teachers care if you fall behind or even care to go the extra mile unless you play sports. If you don't play sports the teachers/coaches act like you don't exist. If you're a quiet kid like I was then you'll just be forgotten about. Now that I'm an adult i can see that it would have been very easy for me to feel accepted if the teachers had accepted me. The students didn't but they're teenagers. I think the adults should have known better. I look back at my time there as completely wasted. 5 years of my life where my parents wasted money sending me to a school they thought was decent. Choose another school.

Holy Cross has been the training ground where I have molded myself into a useful man. It has allowed me to blossom academically and in my relationships with others. It lacks discipline and structure at times, but with different personnel, those are simple fixes. Its rich culture is something everyone can immerse in and find themselves.

I graduated from Holy Cross in 2004. The school did not give me a good education. Holy Cross values sports more than education.

I've had a few meetings and also sent numerous emails to the heads of the school. There was an incidence where my son could not eat lunch because he did not have his ID and there are race issues with miniorities that the school is not willing to address. This was a serious problem for me last year,...
