Elvis Presley may not have gone to school in New Orleans, but he did shoot scenes from the movie Kid Creole in one of its nearly century-old schools. The “Little Red Schoolhouse” is found at 721 St. Philip St. in the French Quarter and is home to Homer A. Plessy Community School. The institution is one of two Plessy schools, the other located less than a mile away also on St. Philip Street. Both schools focus on the arts as a way to develop creative and critical thinking skills and to help students become responsible citizens. The Plessy School employs an arts integration method, using the arts to teach core subjects. Students have proven to be more engaged, leading to greater academic success. The French Quarter location teaches pre-kindergarten through grade four with 466 enrolled students. This coed charter school’s first graduating class had an 86 percent acceptance rate to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Currently, Homer A. Plessy is the only school left in the French Quarter. Plessy School is heavily rooted in the community and believes every student should actively engage in building and interacting with their communities. This kind of civic engagement, along with their focus on the arts, has made Homer A. Plessy Community School an integral part of New Orleans.
