Located at 2401 Humanity St. in New Orleans’ Gentilly neighborhood is the Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary Charter School. The public, co-ed institution enrolls nearly 800 students and serves children from pre-K through eighth grade in an environment of self and mutual respect. Uniforms are mandatory at the school and generally cost between $10 and $20. Bethune Elementary Charter is Americans with Disabilities Act compliant so that every learner has the opportunity to prepare for their future by pursuing academic success. The school also has before and after-care programs which operate on a sliding scale. Transportation is provided daily to and from campus via yellow bus for all qualifying students. To supplement their academic courses, students can take music classes, study Spanish, get hands-on experience in the science and computer labs and play football or basketball. There are also extracurricular activities like Cub Scouts, cheerleading, Brownies, dance team or student council for the more civically minded. In 2015, the school moved into its current home, which features amenities such as a new gymnasium, cafeteria, playground and a central courtyard surrounded by the U-shaped building, as well as classrooms and labs built to let in natural northern light.
