ReNEW Dolores T. Aaron Academy may not be very old—a rarity in New Orleans schools—but in the 15 years since its founding, the institution has made great strides to become one of the top 25 in the Recovery School District. Founded in 2007 and operating in seven trailers after Hurricane Katrina, the school is now housed in a $27 million building that occupies the same lots a previous elementary school did before the storm.
Aaron Academy caters to children from pre-kindergarten through grade eight. It endeavors to create a positive environment for blended learning techniques. It believes individual integrity and critical thinking skills create personal and academic successes. To instill these traits, the academy uses five values to guide its students: perseverance, scholarship, integrity, community and leadership.
This co-educational school is part of the ReNEW Schools charter network. It has nearly 800 students, offers daily transportation to and from school, and are Americans with Disabilities Act compliant. For those interested in sports, Aaron Academy has teams for flag football, soccer, track and field, step team, and basketball. The more artistically inclined won’t be disappointed. The school has fine arts courses as well as a high-energy band that has performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and with the Preservation Hall Brass Band.
