Located at 6601 Franklin Ave. in New Orleans’ Lake Terrace-Oaks neighborhood, The NET Charter High School: Gentilly, serves students throughout Gentilly and New Orleans East. The school enrolls 175 students in ninth grade through 12 and some over-age eighth graders through a dual-enrollment program. It’s American with Disabilities Act compliant and offers transportation to and from campus for qualifying students. As part of the Educators for Quality Alternatives charter school network, the NET operates on four values: belonging, independence, mastery and generosity. Their motto is “One Student at a Time,” and that shines through in the way the school makes flexible scheduling a priority. Knowing that many students have familial and work obligations, the school works with the student to ensure they meet their curricula requirements while providing tailored support as they learn and grow. Another way The NET does this is with its NEST program, an in-school child care facility. The NET opened in Gentilly in 2017 and has since become one of the top performing alternative schools in Louisiana. It offers courses in carpentry, electrician courses and continues to support its students with a post-graduate program. There’s also an internship partnership between the school and businesses throughout the Greater New Orleans area. This partnership allows students to participate in professional environments to prepare them for careers, and can sometimes lead to immediate placement after graduation.
