Founded in 1994, Community Action School — Middle School 258 — is a coed public institution for grades six through eight. Referred to as CAS, the school enrolls about 240 students and employs about 23 full-time teachers. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. CAS shares its building with MS 256 Lafayette Academy and Manhattan School for Children. CAS has been named “School of the Year” by outside organizations such as the Center for Social and Emotional Education and the National Center for Learning Disabilities, and its anti-bullying program is recognized by PFLAG (Parents and Families of Lesbians and Gays). Complementing a standards-driven curriculum in math, science and reading are sports activities like cross-country running, soccer, basketball, baseball and martial arts, as well as enrichment programs in photography, visual arts, yoga, drama, and community service programs. Partnerships with university-affiliated organizations augment these programs, as well as the New York Road Runners Club, American Museum of Natural History, Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Hunter University Learning Lab. All students applying to CAS interview with a staff member and complete a math, reading and writing assessment.

I'm a 8th grader here. The teachers are okay but some of them tend to bring personal work issues into class. Majority of the students are bullies or they sell/ smoke weed. The extracurriculars are okay. The sports teams are cool.

I’m a current student at CAS. It’s a good school, but definitely has some flaws. The kids there are rowdy, immature, and are bullies. If you are not like them, you are bound to have some trouble. In the few days I was here, it’s hard to talk to someone because they’re so different from me and make me...

I graduated from community action school and it was a wonderful experience. I still remember how welcoming the teachers were, how much I enjoyed my classes and the amazing extracurricular activities, and how much I learned from CAS. I remember the arts and crafts we did, being in multiple plays, and...

From my very first interation wtih the Parent Coordinator, Ms. Fittipaldi, to every single interaction my son and...

This school was by far the worst school I've ever attended. The staff here lack diversity and lack any sort of plan when it comes to bullying and misbehaving of the students. They take no real actions when a kid gets into an altercation with another kid but to apologize. They continuously promise ch...
