Founded in 1996 as one of the first small progressive schools in Manhattan, Humanities Preparatory Academy is an alternative to traditional schools focusing on lecture, repetition and memorization. The school utilizes New York State Performance-Based Assessment Tasks instead of Stage Regents Exams. In place of multiple tests for graduation, students are guided to design an original research project with a writing component in all academic subject areas. A panel of experts then evaluates the research project. Housed on the third floor of the Bayard Rustin Educational Complex, Humanities Prep asserts the implementation of a full liberal arts curriculum. There is a rigorous sequence of math, science, social studies and English, emphasizing personalization, collaboration, critique and student input. Students can also elect courses in visual arts, foreign languages, fitness and computer science. The school also offers summer programs and internships in biotechnology, youth advisory councils, the Brooklyn Historical Society and the YMCA. As a community, Humanities Preparatory Academy strives to exemplify values such as mutual respect, cooperation, empathy, love of humankind, justice and service to the world.

In short, the english and history courses are pretty good. However the science and especially math courses are not that great. The math teachers don't teach the actual curriculum or they focus on a small part of it for the whole year. I wish they would add more AP classes around english and science

humanities preparatory was a school that helped me better myself, I transferred my junior year and I believe that they cared enough for every student in that school, which many schools aren't really like that. this is a very small environment so you'll stick out to the teachers if you just be yourself. nobody in the school is judgmental and everyone Is basically friends.

I really appreciate that you can truly express yourself at this school. Also being able to speak to your teachers and actually build a good relationship with your teachers is really helpful for your academic career while at this school. There is many clubs to join that can bring you other opportunities such as trips and meeting authors of books you read.

STUDENTS ARE BETTER PREPARED FOR COLLEGE WHEN THEY ARE NOT TAUGHT TO A TEST. THIS DOES NOT RELY ON SILLY REGENTS EXAMS TO GRADUATE STUDENTS. THEY EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF INDEPENDENT THOUGHT AND CRITICAL THINKING. WRITING AND RESEARCH ARE A FOCUS AND THE STUDENTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO GO TO ANS REMA...

We are sorry that the parent below from February 2011 is dissatisfied with the school. However, it's not useful for them to disseminate information about the school which is not factual. It is factual data that Humanities Preparatory Academy had a 4-year graduation rate of 83% for school year 2009-...
