Known as MCS, Manhattan Country School is a private, independent day school serving prekindergarten through eighth grade. The school has a primary location in Manhattan and an adjunct farm in Roxbury, New York. MCS opened in 1966 with 66 students and moved to its present building on 86th Street in 2016.
The initial motivations for the school’s founding arose from the Rev. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and social justice has remained a core value throughout MCS’s history. Currently enrolling approximately 260 students, the school has a student-teacher ratio of 6-to-1.
A unique aspect of the curriculum at MCS is the access to the school’s farm in the Catskill Mountains, north of New York City. Students first visit the farm in second grade, and their stays are gradually extended as they advance in age. Opportunities to observe nature on the farm heavily influence coursework, which involves weather observation, life cycles, ecology, botany, biology and science.
In MCS’s Lower School, which serves preschool through fifth-grade students, the curriculum concentrates on the introductory study of subject areas, including language arts, math, science, Spanish, art, music and physical education. In its Upper School, seventh and eighth-grade students are offered a two-year rotating curriculum for English, science and history.
