The Neighborhood School, a public elementary school in the hear of the East Village, enrolls students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. Founded in 1991 by a group of teachers with a progressive approach to learning, the Neighborhood School serves a student body of roughly 300 students with a student-to-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. Thirteen mixed-age, developmentally grouped classrooms offer lessons in language arts, science, social studies, mathematics and the arts. Common to all classes is supplemental coursework and instruction in computer technology, Spanish and physical education. The Neighborhood School partners with the nearby Third Street Music School for its "Music Instruction on the Lower East Side" initiative and with ArtsConnection's dance programs. The Parent-Teacher Association also sponsors “Studio in a School” arts instruction. Nearby playground visits are common, with McKinley Playground just around the corner offering “Kids in Motion” exercise programs from the New York City Parks Department. Many of the classes feature integrated co-teaching, with both a special education teacher and a general education teacher in almost every classroom. In keeping with its philosophy of a tangible, real-world education, the Neighborhood School organizes frequent field trips around New York City and beyond.

We LOVE The Neighborhood School! It has such a lovely, warm environment and a very engaged PTA. In addition to the regular curriculum, there's music (from Third Street Music), art, dance, science, project time, and so much more. TNS is also part of The Progressive Education Network of New York. Our experience at TNS is totally different from the last review. TNS is a progressive school - but that does not mean that children are not learning or are in any way 'behind' - and I don't know anyone who is signing their kids up for hours of tutoring outside of school to get 'caught up' for middle...
