PS/MS 34 Franklin D. Roosevelt is a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade elementary through middle school located in Alphabet City. Located on East 12th Street between Szold Place and Avenue D, this school boasts a large campus with a huge outdoor space for outdoor play and recess.
Franklin D. Roosevelt school is a learner-driven, socially responsible, and community minded environment with a focus on putting students, not standards, first. Educators at this school firmly believe in the use of play as learning in the elementary grades, and integrative learning in the middle school grades. Students participate in hands-on learning activities like creating papier-mache astronaut students for a science unit on space, or theater performances of the United States Constitution during humanities classes. In addition to a traditional curriculum of math, science, literacy, and history, the school offers a robust curriculum in Mandarin, art, theater, and physical education. This school is flagged by the state as a failing school. Students are performing terribly. There are better schools in the area to send a child.
