P.S. 40 is a coeducational public elementary school for grades pre-Kindergarten through sixth. It carries the name of one of its more illustrious alums, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, renowned for his 19th-century sculptures of American Civil War heroes. P.S. 40 takes up the first three floors of a five-story Gothic revival building erected in 1899. With 48 classrooms, the facility hosts two other public schools, the Salk School of Science and the special-needs Learning Spring School. The Common Core curriculum recently adopted enhanced and strengthened math programs. Literacy, reading and English classes follow the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project guidelines at Columbia University. A community-oriented school, P.S. 40 educates numerous neighborhood children, many from nearby Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town. Nationally recognized in 2019 as a Blue Ribbon School, P.S. 40's annual enrichment programs range from "Circus Arts" in first grade, "Inside Broadway" in third, to a National Dance Institute project in fourth. A modern, updated, and enlarged computer lab, a fenced rooftop recreation space and a welcoming, comfortable library welcomes students to this high-achieving public school.

P.S. 40 is a school with a good principal, friendly staff, and involved parents. The class sizes are larger than I prefer.

This is a good school because my child is making academic progress, is excited about learning, and enjoys the school community. The class sizes are larger than the ideal size. Yet, even with the larger class sizes, the teachers meet the challenges and they are experienced and qualified. The parent i...

We love PS 40! My third grade daughter has been there since kindergarten. We have great teachers, a superstar principal, and a wonderful community. The art, music and physical education programs are really solid, and each grade has a special year-long program like dance or circus arts.
