The Upper West Side’s PS 87, or the William T. Sherman School, offers classes for students in prekindergarten through grade five. The school enrolls nearly 900 students under the motto, “Our Family Under the Sun,” which captures the PS 87’s positive energy and community spirit.
The school offers a Spanish and English dual language program, which conducts classes in both languages and requires a separate admission application. PS 87's core curriculum is taught by teachers who are "unusually creative, dedicated and talented" educators. At every grade level there are special education teacher support services and integrated co-teaching classes, whereby a special education aide assists the general education teacher. The school is also able to offer students speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and counseling.
PS 87 has declared itself a “special music school” for its dedication to learning through playing instruments and singing. Students enjoy several extracurricular activities in music, dance, art and drama. Enrichment field trips include visits to the American Museum of Natural History, the Hayden Planetarium and the Central Park Zoo, all of which are within easy walking distance from the school’s location on West 78th Street.
