The Ideal School of Manhattan is a private, independent, kindergarten through grade 12 co-ed institution that is organized around the principle of inclusion. In practice, this means differentiated and individualized instruction for students of all ability levels. Founded in 2006 by three families with children who had Down syndrome, Ideal’s two campuses stand in close proximity on the Upper West Side, with the Lower School housed in a private, standalone, school-owned building and the Upper School occupying four floors in the B’nai Jeshrun synagogue. A student body of around 220 and a faculty of about 90 yields a teacher-student ratio that ranges from 3-to-1 in Lower School to 4-to-1 in Upper School. General educators and learning specialists co-teach in all classrooms during the early grades, while seminar-style classes and a rotating curriculum mark the upper grades. Music and art programs begin in kindergarten. A sample of advanced music electives indicates the scope of the program: vocal techniques, chorus, piano/keyboard, and music recording, production and composition. Offerings in visual and expressive arts are equally robust. Extracurriculars range from clubs for dance, debate, Star Wars, cartooning, chess and motorsport, while after-school sports include volleyball, golf, cross country, basketball, and track and field.

Wonderful place to work in a very supportive culture. Small class sizes allow children to get what they need.

When my child started at Ideal in 6th grade, she did not speak. She is currently in 11th grade and participates in all of the school plays and musicals and has found her voice. The teachers are incredible at meeting the students where they are and inspiring them to learn. The teachers and administra...

The class size, the communication, events, activities, field trips, and of course the teaching and learning process. We can’t wait to see what the fut...

The IDEAL School is amazing! The small classes create student engagement and excitement about learning. The High School principal leads by example and cares deeply about all the students. The inclusion model is hard to find, and IDEAL is among the best in New York City.

A poorly run school. The do not walk the talk. It's all PR. Don't go near it.
