For students who want an in-depth study of academics, the James Baldwin School provides a personalized track. Named after the prolific New York City-born writer and social critic, this school seeks to promote the values of democracy, such as mutual respect, cooperation, empathy and social justice. The curriculum and the school’s support system are designed to prepare students for higher education and beyond. Located on West 18th Street in Chelsea, James Baldwin School serves students in ninth through 12th grades who have completed at least one semester at another school and see this institution as a better fit. Upon enrollment, students receive personalized college advising and can participate in college visits with their classmates and teachers. They also have access to a full-time college counselor and are offered free SAT preparation classes. Throughout the school year, class trips to educational destinations like the United Nations, the Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Opera enrich the learning process. The school also has semi-annual intensives, where regular classes are paused for 5-10 school days to allow for in-depth, intense academic support, adventure and fitness programs. French, Mandarin and Spanish language courses are also available. The athletic program includes baseball, basketball, tennis, wrestling and bowling. James Baldwin School is committed to inspiring the love of learning.

Very supportive teachers but sometimes they are supportive to the point where they don't give you enough space and free will of thought to grow and create dreams of your own. They push college to the point where they don't allow you to want any other options, which is good for kids who need it but not kids like me who knew they wanted something else.

I have a big support system, everyone is polite and help me when I need it the most. When I feel like I can't finish they are sure to let me know I can do it. When work gets hard, all my teachers help me to make sure everything gets done and help me understand what I'm having trouble with. I get all the help I need when I'm applying for colleges and help me understand everything about college and how it works. All my teachers know my name and they make me feel welcomed and make me comfortable to talk during class discussions.
