The STAR Academy is a public school in the East Village offering instruction to children in prekindergarten through fifth grade. Also known by the numerical designation of Public School 63, the STAR Academy enrolls just under 250 students and yields an impressive 9-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio with at least two teachers in every classroom. With a mix of special needs and general education students and educators, the school is overseen by an administration that values accessibility and a dynamic curriculum to meet the individual needs of each student.
Designated by the New York City Department of Education as a “Showcase School," the STAR Academy conducts daily advanced math lessons, interactive games and group work. Writing and reading instruction is equally innovative through the use of learning materials from Columbia University’s Teachers College Reading and Writing program. Additionally, a schoolwide effort to promote literacy devotes the first half hour of each day to individual reading and storytelling.
In addition to weekly art and physical education classes for all students several times a week, the school integrates music study, which includes introductory lessons for keyboard and ukulele, and dance classes once a week through a partnership with the group Notes in Motion.
