You might think elementary school students are a little young to be making policy. But not at A. C. Corcoran Elementary School — a public school in the Charleston County School District that serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Located in the Deer Park neighborhood, the school values student voices and asks students to participate in creating their own leadership goals and behavioral standards.
At the start of each school year, teachers and students go over accountability standards they will be held to for the year. As part of these standards, students are expected to understand “what they are learning, why they are learning it, and how they know when they've mastered it.”
A new program, “Kindness Is the New Cool,” teaches kindness skills to students through everyday activities and lesson plans, even in reading, math and other core classes.
At A. C. Corcoran Elementary School, student voices are heard, valued and encouraged, and participation, and good conduct, are seen as building blocks on the road to leadership and responsibility.
