Collecting eggs in the henhouse, standing in Gilleland Creek peering through a microscope, measuring the circumference of an ancient tree — these are just a few of the many ways students at the Inside Outside school might fill their days. At this private, “nature-based micro-school” for kindergarten through 6th graders in Pflugerville, there’s always something to explore, create or do.
At Inside Outside, students’ natural gifts are nurtured. Students might learn animal husbandry or work in the school’s garden. They might ramble the seven-acre woodland campus, journaling, sketching or taking photographs, if that’s what inspires them. They can learn to sew, paint, cook, build or survive in the wilderness. Sometimes, they just play.
Though Inside Outside is about more than just academics, there are plenty of those, too. And top-notch ones at that. Teachers are Texas-certified and have years of classroom experience. Literacy, science, math and the arts are taught through hands-on group projects so that students can make meaningful connections across subjects and grow together as a community.
