As an affiliate of Our Lady of Sorrows parish, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy is a private Catholic school serving children in kindergarten through twelfth grade in the South Mountain neighborhood of South Phoenix. Like its parent church, the academy is served by priests of the SSPX, which is the Society of Saint Pius X.
In a faith-based approach to learning, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy immerses children in a liberal arts education with a focus on English, phonics, reading, handwriting, math, and religious education. As complements to the core curriculum, the academy also integrates history, science, geography, music, art, Latin, and physical education—all through the lens of serving God.
To quote the academy’s own literature, “well-balanced personalities depend upon the well-rounded education of the whole man, body and soul, through the constant exercise of both natural and supernatural virtues.” Our Lady of Sorrows supports the idea that students’ physical fitness and wellbeing are just as important as their spiritual wellbeing. In that light, the academy partners with the Canyon Athlete Association so that students can compete in soccer and baseball.
Children at Our Lady of Sorrows Academy also attend Holy Mass three times a week, including the Traditional Latin Mass. Students have opportunities to sing or perform at school throughout the year, whether in the annual Nativity Play or during choir recitals.
