Community Day School, in the heart of Squirrel Hill South, bills itself as a nurturing, academically excellent Jewish day school for the 21st century – and its track record backs that up. Its middle school students rank in the 93rd percentile in Educational Records Bureau combined math scores and 89th in combined language arts scores. And its graduates go on to become leaders in high school, college and beyond. Community Day School was created by a group of parents in 1972 as a nondenominational Jewish day school. It started with kindergarten and first grade, then added one grade each year until it reached eighth grade. In 1996, the school moved into and merged with the closing St. Philomena's Church and School at Beechwood and Forward avenues. Today, the independent progressive Jewish institution educates about 270 students from age 3 through eighth grade. Its 45-member faculty yields a student-teacher ratio of 6-to-1, with average class sizes of about 14 students. The seven-acre campus fosters an enriching environment for hands-on learning, with exquisite stone buildings housing state-of-the-art science and technology labs, a grand library, a gymnasium, performing arts spaces, art studios and music rooms. Outside the buildings you’ll find playgrounds for all ages, a multi-purpose athletic field, an outdoor classroom, teaching gardens, a dodgeball pit and a basketball court. The campus also is home to the public art installation “Gary & Nancy Tuckfelt Keeping Tabs: A Holocaust Sculpture.” The internationally recognized landmark commemorates the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust with a corresponding number of aluminum tabs encased in glass blocks. The maze-like design forms the shape of the Star of David as seen from above.

Both of my childrens go to CDS. They both love it! The academic program is very diverse and challenging. The administration is very supportive and work hard to address every student's needs.

My children have been at CDS for 3 years and I couldn't be happier. I picked this school because of it's strong focus on social, character and academic development and the school truly delivers.

I could not be more thrilled with CDS. My family has been there for 6 years and the faculty and staff exceed expectations, and truly tailor the learning experience for the child's needs, while also upholding the needs of society in helping to raise kids that care about others and making a difference in the world.
