For over 100 years, the Grace Lutheran School has been educating prekindergarten through eighth-grade students as a private religious center, serving communities such as River Forest in Chicago, Illinois. Combining a rigorous scholastic program with daily spiritual observances, the Grace Lutheran School curriculum builds an appreciation for service in students, emphasizing Christian teachings to shape students' values, lives and perspectives. Academic focus is different depending on each grade level. For example, third and fourth graders explore novels together and participate in reading circles. Fifth-grade students study American history and lead a Lutheran chapel service once a week. In the seventh and eighth grades, students' personal development intensifies. Research papers, field trips to Chicago's cultural centers, high-level math and two years of American history prepare Grace Lutheran School's junior high school students for the academic challenges ahead. Art is also integrated into core classes along with orchestra, choir and foreign language. Athletic programs at Grace Lutheran include track and field and cross-country teams that begin in the third grade. On the other hand, varsity and junior varsity basketball and volleyball begin in the fifth grade. Students are taught to cultivate a winning attitude that includes accepting loss gracefully. Throughout their academic careers at Grace Lutheran School, children progress toward becoming educated young persons grounded in both knowledge and faith.
