Exploration Elementary Charter School for Science and Technology is a public elementary school in Rochester, New York. Exploration’s Lake Avenue campus, previously known as Nazareth Academy, includes a playground, gardens, and ample green spaces, all nestled comfortably within the city’s Edgerton neighborhood.
Exploration opened in 2017 for students in kindergarten, first, and second grades, taking great pride in its role as the first local charter school dedicated to science and technology. The school maintains good standing and has added a grade level each year since its debut; Exploration now serves 450 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
In keeping with its commitment to nurturing “hands-on, minds-on learning” Explorations embraces project-based learning; this approach provides students with daily opportunities to participate in lab-based exploration. Learners also regularly engage with varied community partners in community spaces; the school celebrates 15+ partnerships, including Rochester Museum and Science Center, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Playworks, and the YMCA.
In an effort to provide a unique and vibrant learning environment, Explorations offers both an extended school day and an extended school year. All age-eligible New York residents are eligible to apply to this tuition-free charter school; admissions are conducted by annual lottery.
