The innovative Northside Elementary School of the Arts (Northside) was founded in 1902 and is situated in a building dating from 1924. The school has gone through numerous additions and renovations, and today serves more than 420 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. It has been a dedicated performance-based school of the arts for more than 12 years and is the only school in the county to offer students an integrated arts enrichment focus. Northside has certified arts teachers in dance, drama, music and visual arts. Students engage in a creative process that connects an art form and a core academic subject area to increase learning engagement in both areas. Further, all students not only see professional performances throughout the year but also become involved in a performance every year. As a Title I school (in which a majority of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch), Northside receives extra teachers, instructional assistants, funding for staff development, and materials for reading and math. The school’s academic performance against recent state-published metrics is mixed, as approximately a third of the students met or exceed state-mandated standards in English language arts, less than both the overall school district and the state. However, close to half the students met or exceeded state math standards, greater than both the district and the state overall.

We have just moved from Ohio and my daughter started at Northside. I am currently removing my child because we have bought a house in another school zone. Her teacher was wonderful, but as far as the secretary staff I am glad to be leaving. They have never made us feel welcome and seem to have no id...
