E. T. Wrenn Middle School is a part of the Edgewood Independent School District. The school is named in honor of Elizabeth T. Wrenn, the first black teacher in the district. Beginning her career as a teacher in the 1940s, she would eventually become a principal and serve at several of the district’s schools. Her teaching career spanned 41 years, with 24 of those years being spent in the Edgewood Independent School District. As a part of the district, E. T. Wrenn has a policy of open enrollment and open boundaries which allows students within the district and the greater Bexar County area to select from any of the district’s schools to attend.
With an enrollment of approximately 600 students and a staff of 28 full-time teachers, the school offers a student-to-teacher ratio of 21-to-1. NICHE, which evaluates colleges and schools on several core competencies, rates E. T. Wrenn above average overall in the area of teacher assessment. Serving students in sixth through eighth grades, E. T. Wrenn is a part of the district’s Schools of Innovation in the Fine Arts Zone. Curriculum targets the fine arts in theater, orchestra, mariachi, choir and band. Students can also take advantage of a career and technical program which offers courses in arts, audio, visual, technology and communication. There is even a video game design curricula available. Extracurricular activities include clubs for robotics, chess, drama and science. E. T. Wrenn is in constant pursuit of their vision, “Laying the foundation for lifelong learning.”
