Alice Birney Elementary is one of the oldest schools in the San Diego Unified School District, located in the center of University Heights. Since 2009, the public, K-5 school has been a certified International Baccalaureate World School, presenting a unique offering of rigorous, student-centered courses. With just over 500 students enrolled in the school and a student-teacher ratio of 24-1. Classes aren’t as intimate as in other schools, but teachers make an effort to deliver a best-in-class education.
Centrally located on Campus Ave in University Heights, the single-story school features both permanent and portable classrooms. In addition, plenty of open space keeps kids engaged and active. A large playground and sports field means recess and after-school activities are held on school grounds.
With the motto “think globally, learn locally,” Alice Birney Elementary works to educate students on diversity, movement and the understanding of others, all the while focusing on core subjects like literacy, science, math and social studies. Weekly specialist-led classes are taught in the arts, Spanish language and culture.

Ms. Amanda’s leadership leaves much to be desired. The school suffers from a lack of trust, ineffective meetings, and complacency. Parents are dissatisfied, and students deserve better. A change in leadership is overdue.

Birney is a unique school with its IB curriculum and its wide array of students from various backgrounds. There are many ways to connect with other parents through school festivals and fundraisers. Wish the principal was friendlier. Overall, a great school.
