The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

John O'Connell probably is one of the more low-key schools in the mission district, but there's really no diversity, mostly Latinos. The teachers at the school can be very caring and some couldn't really care less about you coming to class or you walking out or not doing work. The food at the school is disgusting I very much do not like it and would rather just starve. The sports are decent I like that basketball and baseball team but besides that the school isn't all that good.

John O'connell High School is a great place for students who are searching for pathways once they become upper classmen. I'm in the culinary pathway and genuinely liked it there, but I would say that I wish this school had more funding for programs, events, and AP courses.

It's a small school but holds a lot of minorities and helps teach about those minorities history. I've never seen or experienced any bullying at John O Connell. Not the best academics, I didn't get a lot of homework here. Though I thoroughly enjoyed the people I've met at this school, including both the teachers and students.
My younger child transferred into O'Connell this year. Our experience to date has been dismaying. The level of chaos is incredible - I've spent entire days just trying to figure out whom I should contact with specific questions; when I finally find the right person their responsiveness runs at about...
Everyone is involved, and you can see the teachers at work trying to improve everything. The staff makes sure the students are safe. They provide good opportunities for college.
