Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy offers high school kids a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience with multiple career options. Built in 2012, the large school opens its doors to ninth through 12th grade students and offers about 20 vocational programs. Graphic arts, cosmetology, carpentry, culinary and automotive mechanics are just some of the programs kids can choose to pursue. When students begin at Putnam, they start by exploring all the offered programs before choosing their top three. Once they’ve spent a week learning more about each program, students can decide what path they’d like to study. They’ll spend the next three and a half years exploring their vocation, going on field trips and learning from professionals with opportunities for scholarships, awards and membership in SkillsUSA, a career and technical student organization. Putnam students have won multiple SkillsUSA awards both in the district and nationally. Putnam works on a “swing week” format, meaning students alternate weeks in vocational training and traditional academic classes. The school engages with the community to give students hands-on experience in their trade. like a mall, storefronts showcase students’ work, and the school is open to the public when it’s not in session. By partnering with the neighboring Springfield High School of Science and Technology, Putnam Vocational ensures that all students who want experience working in their prospective field can get it. All graduates leave with certification so they can immediately begin their careers.

I overall have no complaints about Putnam, they have provided me with good education and a good high school experience.

The best part of my experience would have to be the career readiness. From learning about different careers in freshman year to learning how to resume in my junior year I have grown so much. The cons though is that we don't have many clubs and organizations for students to join extracurriculars within the school. If I want to join extracurriculars most of the time I have to do it outside of school which bothers me.

Overall it is a great experience, you make new friends there as most of the people around are humble. The teachers are amazing at there job despite having have the time of a normal school. They are very understanding of others situations and they make sure to be tailored to each class. The classes themselves are always a good size as well. You will almost always walk out of any class learning something that you didn't know beforehand. It was a great experience.

First off I like their rules that students have to follow. Putnam is a great school because it has a lot to offer and so many different workshops. The teachers there are there for the students and really do want to help them in order for them to be the future of tomorrow and become the best men and...
