The newest in the Alief Independent School District trio of mega-high schools, Taylor High School educates about 3,100 9th-12th graders. In Alief, the high school you attend is the luck of the draw since a computerized lottery makes that decision. Students can switch schools, though, if they have a relative currently attending or graduated from another high school. Unlike Elsik and Hastings, Taylor doesn’t have a separate 9th-grade center. But like the other high schools, Taylor offers night school, Mandarin Chinese classes, and a robust career and technology education program, otherwise known as CTE. Taylor students opting for CTE complete introductory campuses at the high school and take advanced classes at the Alief Center for Advanced Careers. Students can earn credit toward a college degree, an associate’s degree, or certification while gaining hands-on experience. On the athletic front, Taylor offers plenty of sports for men and women, including basketball, cross-country, golf, swimming, and diving. Athletic training, cheerleading, dance, and drill teams are open to all students. Academically, Taylor students lag behind their Texas peers in test scores and academic progress from where they were last year, but the school’s graduation rate is on track with other Texas schools. And the students who go on to college need significantly less remediation than their Texas counterparts.

Attending Taylor High School is challenging due to poorly taught AP classes, but the Career Technology Education (CTE) program excels in preparing students like me for careers – specifically sparking my interest in Cybersecurity.
