Aquinas Montessori School is a private school found at 8334 Mount Vernon Highway in the suburbs of Mount Vernon. As a recognized member of Association Montessori Internationale, Aquinas seeks to provide “an environment where children learn freedom and responsibility, choice and structure, creativity and discipline, and the skills necessary to combine individual interests with group cooperation.” Kathleen Futrell, a passionate advocate of Montessori education, started Aquinas Montessori in 1965. Her son, David Futrell, now carries on her legacy along with his wife, Emilia. Aquinas Montessori serves children from three to six years of age in its primary program and children up to 12 years of age in its elementary program. Additionally, there is an early and aftercare program. At Aquinas Montessori, Spanish is taught as early as kindergarten, and Latin is taught starting in fourth grade. During the school year, children enjoy a selection of after-school clubs such as drama, Classics Club featuring classic and award-winning literature, Girl Scouts, Lego Engineering, and the Magnus Chess Academy. The school also offers a summer camp annually that includes gardening and swimming, as well as language, mathematics, biology, geography, art, and music classes. Finally, students enjoy a variety of field trips to exciting places such as the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Museum.

(p-K through 6th grade) The Montessori method that was expertly implemented by the highly trained staff at Aquinas is able to accommodate a wide variety of learning styles. For example, I tended to be very diligent with my lesso...
