Students at St. Matthew Lutheran School have experienced an integrated curriculum with traditional academic subjects and the Christian religion since the 1950s. St. Matthew Lutheran School in Walled Lake serves students in grades K-8, along with a preschool program. The school's mission statement reflects its religious foundation by saying it will empower students in academics, discipleship and service.
The school's approach to technology in our daily lives begins in kindergarten classes. Classes are equipped with iPads and computers so everyone can enhance their learning online. St. Matthew's integration of religion with traditional grade school courses begins in kindergarten. Students start with understanding and observing foundational religious beliefs and how those elements impact their time learning about things like mathematics, reading, science and geography.
By the time students reach the eighth grade, they are immersed in more in-depth studies of the Lutheran religion and biblical teachings. They continue learning core academics to prepare for grades nine through 12 and higher education studies. St. Matthew's students also spend time based on their interests in drama, choir, band and athletics.
Throughout each grade level, St. Matthews students get a chance to participate in an after-school program called Destination Imagination. It is an opportunity for them to explore problem-solving and allows them to approach issues and think without a prescribed order, enabling them to go outside the box with creativity and imagination.
