Rural river town along the Wisconsin-Minnesota border
Sitting along the Wisconsin-Minnesota border is the rural town of Somerset, established in 1856. Known as the “Inner Tubing Capital of the World,” the community is bordered by the Saint Croix River to the west, and flowing through the area is the Apple River. Historically, the rivers contributed to the town’s logging industry and mills. They functioned as highways for fur traders, loggers and explorers. Today, they’re a significant source of local fun. Country living is on the table in this town, with people enjoying river access and views of farm fields. Hobby farms are popular in the area, with many residents keeping horses and llamas. You’ll also find large farms in the area, growing crops and keeping cattle.
Large lot sizes and contemporary homes dominate Somerset
Large homes on lots with plenty of acreage make up the majority of this town. Craftsman-style homes, contemporary estates, private farmhouse retreats, ranch-style homes and sprawling mansions comprise the area, and the price range reflects both the diversity and size of available homes. More modest houses—typically those with up to three bedrooms—start around $190,000 and can up to about $450,000, with lot size and construction year being the primary price influencers. Larger homes can fetch anywhere from $380,000 to $560,000.

The famed Apple River is the site for many an activity in town. Several camping establishments sit along the river, ranked as one of the best rivers in the country for tubing. Apple River is a 77.5-mile tributary of the Saint Croix River, and tubing is an incredibly popular local pastime. The river has a sandbar halfway down its length where locals gather for celebrations with snacks, libations and beach volleyball. In the summertime the area is filled with the sounds of summer concerts held at the riverside Somerset Amphitheater. The outdoor concert venue has a capacity of 40,000 and is the site of musical performances and festivals.
