Two miles from downtown Spartanburg
Hilltop's quiet, verdant and mostly residential streets are tucked between two community green spaces while being a short drive from downtown Spartanburg. The neighborhood's Fire Chief Donald Mills has lived in Spartanburg for decades and has naturally seen much growth and change, including in Hilltop: "The community is very diverse, from younger people to older people. If you had asked me this back when I started here 25 years ago, I would have said it was like a retirement home, but it's not like that anymore. People have passed away, and kids are renting houses," he says. "A lot of them have lived here all their lives."

Modestly-priced bungalows and ranch-styles
Home prices in Hilltop begin in the modest $50,000s to $80,000 range for fixer-uppers under or around 1,000 square feet. Larger homes with updates and remodeled interiors could climb to $150,000 and higher, but homes in the $200,000 range are the least common. D.R. Horton is currently building new Colonial revivals in the northern section of Hilltop that come in at the rarest $300,000 dollar price range. Due to Spartanburg's 19th-century beginnings as a textile industry, it's easy to find bungalows dating back to the 1930s in neighborhoods like Hilltop on the fringes of the downtown area. Homebuyers can also find 1950s ranch styles. Yards are small to modest, sometimes with iron fences and trimmed hedges, and punctuated by the occasional pine tree.

Just a walk away from Spartanburg Medical Center
Neighbors can walk less than a mile in any direction to get to area parks and major conveniences, including Spartanburg Medical Center. The campus sits at the neighborhood’s southern end and provides emergency, trauma, heart, cancer and children’s health care, among other services. For those who worship on Sundays, several churches accommodate different traditions just steps from home, including the non-denominational Hope Point, Bethany Baptist and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox. Asheville Highway is a main artery here, making car commutes quicker. The highway feeds into North Church Street, getting locals to downtown Spartanburg in just over 2 miles.

Starting school at Lone Oak Elementary
Students are served by Spartanburg County School District Number Six. They may begin at Lone Oak Elementary School, where they can take part in one of the many clubs offered, including the elementary band and green thumbs club. They later feed into Fairforest Middle School, which is home to the Lincoln Science Center and Planetarium. Schools across Spartanburg County District Six use it for lessons and activities in astronomy, earth science and more. Meanwhile, Dorman High School boasts a reputable athletics program, with 3 state titles in the last 5 years. As for Niche scores, the elementary and middle schools earn B minuses while the high school scores an A minus.

Sweet tea at Wade's Restaurant
Locals might head to the CVS off North Pine Street for after-school snack runs. Within that same mini shopping complex is a Food Lion for groceries. Other household essentials can be picked up at the Big Lots in the Pinewood Shopping Center, less than a mile east, which also houses nail salons, barber shops and the family-owned local favorite, Wade's Restaurant. Vintage décor lines the walls of this staple that's been serving Southern-style comfort food since the 1940s. There's always a lively Sunday afternoon crowd ordering favorites like hamburger steak and speckled butter beans paired with sweet tea.
The trails at Cleveland Park
A few blocks west, Cleveland Park has an expansive playground split into three sections for older and younger children. Multiple walking and biking trails are woven around the park's ponds, gazebos and picnic pavilions. Events are held here year-round — the biggest is "Boo Bash," a trunk-or-treat event, but the park also hosts Father and Daughter Valentine's day dances. Cleveland Park doesn't allow fishing, but locals head to Duncan Park, Lake Cooley, Lake Bowen and Lake Blaylock for that — all within 15 miles of Hilltop. Duncan Park is the closest, at 5 miles. Milliken Arboretum is privately owned, but the public is allowed on its 600 acres with ponds and waterfalls circled by unpaved trails shaded by hundreds of oaks, elms and other mature trees. "My kids go out there to feed the ducks and walk. It's nice and quiet," Mills says.

Economy of entrepreneurship
There's an economy of almost hidden entrepreneurship here with a few local businesses run from people's homes, including Holt Publishing and PAWsome Boarding. Industrial facilities like Milliken Chemical, Tekna Fill — which produces powders, liquids, and creams — and more also practically in the backyard of Hilltop's residential streets.
