Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane’s largest employer

Within Cliff-Cannon, 2 miles from Downtown Spokane, is one of the city's major employers. Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane’s largest employer, sits below South Hill, a bluff overlooking the apartments, pharmacies and medical offices surrounding Providence. South Hill has large Tudor-style estates with in-ground pools and manicured lawns. These estates were built by the late 19th and early 20th century elite. “South Hill became popular with the advancement of technology,” says Mike Bass, managing broker with Century 21 Beutler & Associates. “At the end of the 19th century, technology allowed city services to go to South Hill, a geographically great area to build these homes with amazing views.” While new technologies allowed the move to Cliff-Cannon nearly 100 years ago, residents now appreciate its proximity to both work and play and its diversity in housing. “The proximity to Downtown is very appealing,” says Bass. “Residents utilize Downtown to a great extent.” Cliff-Cannon is a neighborhood that reminds residents of its history through vintage estates yet remains firmly placed in modernity with its apartment buildings, medical centers and proximity to Downtown.

Townhouses and condos starting at $200,000

“The appeal of this area is the diversity of housing types,” says Bass. This longstanding community offers estate homes built on South Hill between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Homes are surrounded by tall maple and pine trees, thick bushes and hedges that creep onto narrow sidewalks and are contained by brick walls or metal fences. The area offers Victorian-style and Craftsman-style homes, traditional bungalows and Tudor-inspired estates and cottages. Condos and townhouses round out the neighborhood's home-buying options. Townhouses and condos go for $200,000 to $450,000. Single-family homes go from $250,000 to $900,000.

Theodore Roosevelt laid cornerstone of local high school

Children may attend Roosevelt Elementary School, which receives a B from Niche, and Sacajawea Middle School, which receives an A-minus. Students may advance to Lewis and Clark High School, which also receives an A-minus. In 1911, President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of Lewis and Clark High School. Today, Lewis and Clark is listed as one of the best high schools in Spokane and offers students a career and technical education club to learn vocational skills.

Cliff Park and Edwidge Wolson Park

Cliff Park, established in 1908, is a small, circular park where residents may see wild turkeys. The center of the park is on a raised outcropping with stairs leading to a clearing surrounded by a rock wall. The park is mainly forested with enormous pine and maple trees obscuring the view from the outcropping. A forested area below the South Hill, Edwidge Wolson Park, contains the Corbin Art Center and the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens. The art center offers art classes ranging from drawing and crafting to soap-making and writing. The twisting pathways of the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens include a tea house, a pond and flower gardens.

Locally owned restaurants and grocer

While residents take most of their shopping and dining to Downtown Spokane, some retail and dining are scattered around the neighborhood. Family-owned Bennidito's Pizza, a staple since 1996, serves traditional and specialty pies, pastas and sub sandwiches. It's known for its rotating craft beers from local northwest breweries. Other neighborhood favorites include Lebanon Restaurant, a go-to for pita wraps and other Mediterranean specialties. Rocket Bakery, a longstanding local coffee chain, serves handcrafted espresso drinks, house-made pastries and sandwiches. Residents may buy groceries at locally-owned Huckleberry’s Natural Market or Rosauers Supermarkets.

I-90 and bus stops

Cliff-Cannon is walkable, with sidewalks on most blocks and amenities within walking distance. “I’ve done a lot of walking there myself,” says Bass. The area is somewhat bikeable, but most residents drive or take public transportation. Interstate 90 borders the neighborhood, which can become loud for those living nearby. Bus stops are near I-90, within the medical district and along main roadways in the residential area. Cliff-Cannon is 7 miles from the Spokane International Airport.

Holiday Lights in Cowley Park

Local Cowley Park lights up in December, decorated for the holidays by the 4 News Now Extreme Team, a group within the community broadcasting channel KXLY that aims to make a difference in their community. This light display is made to bring Holiday cheer to the neighborhood and the families and staff within Providence Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. Residents who wish to attend religious services may visit the Westminster Congregational, the City Covenant Church and Plymouth Congregational. Along South Grand Boulevard is The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, a massive stone cathedral with a Gothic tower and a stained-glass rose portal above the entryway.
