Southern Spokane suburb with rural overtones
Moran Prairie is a suburban, semirural neighborhood that runs along the southern border of the city of Spokane. The neighborhood attracts residents who want a bit of space to stretch out while retaining easy access to shopping and dining. “People like Moran Heights because it feels suburban but you’re still in the city, not too far from nightlife and dining and whatnot,” says Realtor Steven Silbar of John L. Scott Realty, who has worked in the area for over 8 years. “It’s on South Hill, one of the most popular landing spots in town, and even though it's kind of on the edge of town, there are a lot of shopping and dining options in the neighborhood and just outside of it.”
Spacious modern developments
Spacious interiors and large acreages are common in Moran Prairie, making it ideal for those who value outdoor space and privacy. The northern portion of the neighborhood is mostly composed of residential housing developments, while south Moran Prairie is a mix of farmland and homes with large, multi-acre lots. Many properties on the south side also feature impressive views of the hills and valleys south of Spokane. The housing inventory in the neighborhood is made up of a mix of midcentury ranch-style homes and split-levels, more recently built new traditional homes, and a few modern mansions. Although many of the neighborhood's homes are located in late 20th or early 21st century housing developments, HOAs are not particularly common. Home prices are a little higher than Spokane averages but on par with other South Hill neighborhoods. Most properties list for $500,000 to $700,000, while luxury properties can go for anywhere from $900,000 to over $3 million.
Highly-rated Moran Elementary and Sacajawea Middle
Most students in the neighborhood attend local public schools, which are overseen by the Spokane Public School District. Mullan Road Elementary receives a B-plus from Niche, while Sacajawea Middle School earns an A-minus. Ferris High School has a B-plus grade and its Running Start program allows students to take classes for college credit at Spokane and Spokane Falls community colleges.
Multiple golf courses and South Hill Dog Park
Ben Burr Park is a classic neighborhood space with a play area, walking paths and an 18-hole disc golf course. For dog owners, South Hill Dog Park offers a spacious, woodsy where pets can run freely. The Southside Family Aquatic Facility draws crowds throughout the summer and features a heated outdoor pool and a play area. The neighborhood is home to Spokane’s newest public links, The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, along with one of its oldest private courses, the Manito Golf & Country Club. Locals looking for a slightly wilder outdoor experience can head down the road from Manito and go trail running or mountain biking at High Drive Bluff Park.
Regal Street retail corridor
Despite its semi-rural setting, Moran Prairie is well-equipped with shopping and dining options. “Parts of Moran Prairie can feel pretty secluded, especially on the south side,” says Silbar. “But that’s just the atmosphere. No matter where you are in the neighborhood, you’re close to a grocery store and at least a few restaurants.” South Regal Street serves as the main commercial artery, hosting a variety of grocery stores, big-box retailers and eateries. Revel 77 Coffee, a local roastery, is a popular spot for high-quality coffee and light bites, while Winescape Winery lets visitors enjoy both local vintages and local scenery. South Hill Grill is another neighborhood favorite known for its brunch and comfort food served on a seasonal patio.
Getting to Downtown Spokane
Downtown Spokane is a 6-mile drive north of the neighborhood. Multiple bus routes pass along Regal Street and 57th Avenue, but the vast majority of residents rely on private transportation. State Highway 195 passes just west of Moran Prairie, connecting the neighborhood to I-90 and Spokane International Airport. The Airport is 12 miles from the neighborhood and offers direct flights to 20 locations in the U.S.
