For a long time, going to Syosset would have meant heading into the village of Oyster Bay. The introduction and naming of the hamlet’s train station made its footprint clearer by the early 20th century, its transit-hub center surrounded by a blended landscape of production farms and newly built industrialist estates along Long Island’s Gold Coast. The highly developed suburbia of today is a relatively new look, but stretches of hilly country roads closer to Muttontown and longtime residents carry the memory of that old village. “People like me remember Syosset the way it was with the horse and buggies,” says James Balletta, a broker with Coldwell Banker who has lived in the area for 87 years. “The business district has transformed with modern stores, but most people are coming to Syosset for the most important thing, and that’s school district.” Syosset is an ever-modernizing Nassau County suburb keeping up with 21st-century desires for highly rated schools and ample community spaces, but the appeal of the North Shore’s wooded countryside at its edges and its convenience to Long Island commuter routes are features that have remained constant over time.

Commuting to Syosset Hospital and NYC
Although subdivisions and suburbia have swept over what were once cucumber and cabbage patches, Syosset still maintains a small base of industry. The North Shore University Hospital system is one of the largest employers in the Town of Oyster Bay, represented within the hamlet at Syosset Hospital. Syosset is best known, however, as a bedroom community for New York City commuters. Riders boarding at the Syosset Long Island Rail Road Station have a roughly one-hour trip to Penn Station; express trains departing from the nearby Hicksville Station offer a 45-minute ride. Drivers braving Long Island Expressway traffic have a roughly 35-mile drive to Manhattan. Both LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports are about 25 miles away.
Midcentury suburbs and Muttontown-style manors in Syosset
South of Syosset Station, the hamlet’s evenly spaced residential blocks are like those found in many suburban Nassau County hamlets, full of single-family homes built from the 1950s through 1980s. To the north of Syosset Station, the essence of the Gold Coast is preserved in tree-shaded roads lined with larger lots and larger homes built from the 1920s to 2020s, though manors set on sprawling acreages are less typical than homes on streets that straddle the line between wooded countryside and suburbia. “I do a lot of new construction. One house gets bought, knocked down and replaced by a new house,” says Linda Freedman, an associate broker at Douglas Elliman who specializes in the North Shore and has lived in the Syosset area since 1999. “Many times, it’s two working adults, two and a half children, you know – a very busy lifestyle. So, they’re looking for something brand-new or renovated.” The median price of a single-family home is $1.2 million, roughly three times the national median price of $418,700 cited by the National Association of Realtors.

Champion swimmers and musicians at one of America’s best school districts
Syosset Central School District earns an A-plus from Niche, as does every individual school in the district. Syosset’s consistently high ratings also earn Niche’s designations as the second-best district in New York and the fifth best in the entire country for 2025.
Producing a high percentage of university-bound graduates is a point of pride for Syosset High, as are extracurricular programs like Nassau County champion swim teams and an accomplished music department. Universal prekindergarten is offered through local organizations, including through houses of worship like St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church and North Shore Synagogue.

Many of Syosset’s major recreation spaces sit at its borders with neighboring communities. The pool and ice-skating rink open in the warmer and cooler months respectively, but the rest of Syosset-Woodbury Community Park’s athletic courts and other amenities are open throughout the year. A relatively new 18-hole golf course sprawls around a historic manor at the Woodside Club in Muttontown. The hamlet’s position in the town of Oyster Bay means that residents enjoy access to nearby North Shore beaches like Harry Tappen Beach and South Shore beaches like Tobay Beach. The Syosset Public Library is popular for browsing shelves or attending craft and exercise programs.

Downtown Syosset’s village-style shopping district sprung up as the rest of the hamlet did, centered around the Long Island Rail Road Station. Further south, Jericho Turnpike brings larger strip malls and national retailers through the center of Syosset, as do stretches of Oyster Bay Road.
