West Tampa
Centuries-old meat markets and Latin supermarkets
The neighborhood's cultural flavor has been marinating for a long time, exemplified by businesses over 100 years old, including Italian specialty markets like Cacciatore and Sons. "Growing up, we would drive over 30 minutes to go buy their meats," says West Tampa Little League secretary Jonathan Perrone, who grew up visiting his grandmother's house in West Tampa. Latin businesses are in even greater supply. According to Martinez, "The honey Cuban from West Tampa Sandwich Shop is out of this world." Residents can also purchase Peruvian baked goods from Panitas Bakery, a palomilla steak from La Terista and even visit a location for Fresco y Mas, the Latin spin-off of Winn-Dixie supermarkets. But because of the West Tampa's size, it's easier for some residents to shop at the Walmart Supercenter in the southwestern corner of the neighborhood. Most businesses are located on the outer edges of the neighborhood, along major roadways. But some are near the center, such as Coco Frio's Fresh Produce, where thirsty locals go to sip the sweet center of a freshly split coconut through a straw.Summer camps, senior centers and Buccaneers tailgating
Sports are a major way for residents to remain active and social. Residents of all ages frequently gather in the parking lot of Raymond James Stadium to tailgate before a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game. Some neighborhood teens spend their summer vacations and after-school times at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, participating in camps and weekly classes, such as karate lessons. Meanwhile, the neighborhood's retirement-age residents visit the David Barksdale Senior Center in MacFarlane Park for open play pickleball and group fitness classes. The Senior Center also hosts frequent anaerobic activities like quilting clubs and bridge games.Multiple ways into downtown Tampa
Flanked to the south by Interstate 275, reaching downtown is as easy as crossing the Hillsborough River on the Interstate, or on the Laurel Street Bridge. “The area has always been conveniently located, within 5 minutes of a hospital, airport and downtown Tampa,” says Realtor Justin Silver with Abalaris Real Estate. However, traffic slowdowns are frequent on the Interstate, especially during peak commuting hours. There are alternatives for getting around, including bus routes throughout the neighborhood. Those seeking a leisurely journey can even hop on a ferry at Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park and stop at various points downtown. However, many residential streets lack pedestrian infrastructure because of the neighborhood's age. "I would feel really comfortable if living north of MacFarlane Park," Perrone says. "But to cross MacDill Avenue? That's a tough one."Classical and crafty stylings preserved
From the Hillsborough River to the Tampa International Airport, West Tampa contains an eclectic mix of old and new architecture, including historical neoclassical buildings and brand-new multi-story homes. Some blocks feel like a walk through the past, with red brick streets leading to Craftsman-style bungalows and Florida Cracker cottages built in the early 1900s. Others have moved on, exchanging acreage for a spacious Mediterranean-style villa with modern features. “Lots of investors have been taking advantage of the old homes and big lots in West Tampa,” Silver says. “They are demolishing the old homes, splitting the lots in half and building two-story houses to maximize interior square footage.” Prices can thus range widely, but the neighborhood has options for most buyers. Older bungalows, ranchers and cottages built in the early-to-mid 20th century tend to sell for $150,000 to $500,000. Newly built homes typically begin around $475,000 and can reach just under a million dollars.Little League and accessible playgrounds at MacFarlane Park
When Hugh MacFarlane donated 40 acres of land to the city in 1908, he stipulated that the parcel would remain a park forever. "That's really reassuring for someone that buys a house nearby because the park will always be there," Perrone says. Over the years, MacFarlane Park has only become more inclusive and welcoming, now home to Freedom Playground – a fully ADA-accessible playground featuring handicap-accessible swing sets, sensory stimulation areas and ADA restrooms. "It really symbolizes the overall acceptance of the community," Martinez says. On Saturdays, MacFarlane Park gets busy as West Tampa Little League gets into full swing. Additional parks are found throughout West Tampa, such as the basketball courts and playground at Rey Park. When the Florida sun is blazing, most parks in the neighborhood offer indoor options. To cool off, residents often dip in the pool or hit the indoor gymnasium for pickup basketball at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.Top-100 schools for diversity
Students in West Tampa begin school in their neighborhood at West Tampa Elementary, which has a B-minus Niche score and class sizes well below the national average of 17 students per teacher. For grades 6-8, students are split between Madison and Monroe Middle Schools, both of which have B-minus scores and are ranked in the top 100 most-diverse public middle schools in Florida. For grades 9-12, students attend Jefferson High, a B-rated school that offers the school district's 3DE Program for out-of-classroom learning experiences.Things to consider
The most routine factor of everyday life in West Tampa is noise and congestion that spills over from the Interstate during peak commuting hours. Non-violent crime is also marginally higher in West Tampa than the national average. The neighborhood has an overall CAP Index score one point above the national average, but most forms of violent crime are on par with national trends.
